Recognize risk, adapt thoughtfully, and know when to pause or refer.

Lesson 17 of 18

Mental Health Conditions

Mental health conditions can influence stress, energy, attention, sleep, and comfort with touch, yet they do not define a person or automatically preclude massage. Trauma-informed care gives clients choice, predictability, and control. Some medications can affect alertness, temperature regulation, or blood pressure. Maintain boundaries, obtain ongoing consent, and respond compassionately without taking on a role outside your scope.

Key points

  • Ask permission before each new area or technique and make stopping easy at any time.
  • Offer choices about draping, position, pressure, music, and whether conversation is welcome.
  • Anxiety or trauma history may make surprise, restraint-like positioning, or unexpected touch distressing.
  • Severe disorientation, acute intoxication, or inability to provide informed consent means do not proceed.
  • Respect confidentiality and avoid interpreting emotional responses as diagnoses.
  • If a client expresses imminent danger to self or others, follow emergency and local duty-of-care protocols.

Key terms

Trauma-informed care
An approach emphasizing safety, choice, collaboration, and respect.
Informed consent
Voluntary agreement based on understandable information and the ability to decline.
Anxiety
A state of apprehension that may affect comfort and functioning.
Dissociation
A disrupted sense of connection with awareness, memory, or surroundings.
Boundary
A clear limit that protects a safe and appropriate therapeutic relationship.

Memory tip

Predictable choices return control to the client.

Clinical note

Do not provide psychotherapy or advise changes to psychiatric medication. Pause if consent becomes unclear, and help connect clients with appropriate professional support when requested.
